A: Sometimes, available dogs on the ABMC rescue site are stated as
inappropriate for adoptive homes who have cats. If so, would this
warning apply also to homes with small dogs? (Or is cat-safety
considered a completely different trait from friendliness with fellow
dogs?)
A rescued Malinois that is listed as being inappropriate for homes
with cats, does not necessarily mean that the dog will not be
appropriate for a home with small dogs. A cat smells different from
a dog and acts different from a dog. Even a small toy dog will act
and smell like a dog. Most rescued Malinois will not treat these
small dogs like prey because they realize that they are dogs. While
a cat to many Malinois is regarded as prey, just like a squirrel.
Some Malinois are good with indoor cats but not outdoor cats for the
same reason. They decide that the indoor cat is a part of the family
(not prey) but the outdoor cat is fair game.
Some Malinois may be too rough for a small dog, too rambunctious or
playful, but most will adjust their play to the little dog's size.
Our foster homes try to evaluate their foster dogs with cats, small
dogs and large dogs. They can determine if the dog they are
fostering has a lot of prey drive or is more laid back. If you are
interested in adopting a particular rescued Malinois, please tell
the foster home what type of pets you have and ask them if they think
their fostered dog will fit into your home.
-
Q: Where do the Malinois you have for adoption come from?
-
A: Usually county/city/town/municipal shelters and humane societies located all over the United States. Some are found running loose and others are turned in to the shelter by owners.
-
Q: Is there a fee to adopt a Malinois
-
A: Yes. Our adoption fees will vary and is determinded by many different factors. Check each dogs profile for his specific adoption fee.
-
Q: Why is there an adoption fee?
-
A: The adoption fee helps to defray the expenses incurred with each dog that enters the rescue system. On average those expenses are about $300+ per dog.
-
Q: Why are those expenses incurred?
-
Expenses include: fees paid to shelters, spaying/neutering, rabies vaccine, current DHLPP vaccine, a heartworm check, a stool check, and either microchipping or tattooing.
-
Q: I have been told to file an application and become pre-approved, I don't understand. Why that is necessary?
-
If a Malinois becomes available in the system, that might suit your particular needs, you really need to be pre-approved. Since everyone that helps with rescue does so on a strictly volunteer basis, becoming pre-approved clears all the preliminary requirements and shortens the time involved in the final steps of the adoption process.
-
Q: Who will do my Home Check?
-
Whenever possible a Malinois owner will do your home check. However, in some cases we depend on owners of the Belgian Terveren or Belgian Sheepdog community, close cousins to the Belgian Malinois, to do your home check. If at all possible they will bring a Belgian Malinois with them.
-
Q: Why does a Home Check need to be done?
- 1. To confirm that the applications are correct/accurate (own home, fence etc.)
- 2. To confirm that the people are familiar with the breed, have done their homework.
- 3. To confirm that all family members want a new dog.
- 4. To allow our applicants to meet a Malinois or Belgian in person.
- 5. To make us feel good about sending one of our rescue babies to your home!!!!
-
Q: If I apply for a specific dog does that mean that is the dog I will be able to adopt?
- Available dogs are matched as closely as possible with the adoptive home
to insure each placement is "permanent". Every effort is made to determine
if the dog you are applying to adopt suits you, your living conditions and
family make-up. This means that occasionally during one or another of the
stages of the adoption process it is possible the temperament/personality of
the Malinois you've chosen will be deemed unsuitable for your lifestyle.
Should that happen you are welcome to complete the steps of the approval
process and then wait until a Malinois that does *fit* your family and
lifestyle becomes available.
-
Q: Why do we require that the dogs be spayed/neutered?
- ALL our dogs are spayed/neutered no matter how old or how young. We do not want to be part of the problem. Some of our dogs come from shelters were they were turned in by breeders who could not find homes for the puppies. Accidental breedings do happen and we do not want to take that chance. Also, we do not know what the background is on most of our rescue dogs. These are not dogs that should be bred.
-
Q: Do we require a fenced yard?
- Sometimes. We strongly recommend a fenced yard. We may require a fenced yard if the adoptive family has small children and the possibility of a dog running out of an open door is increased. The family lives on a busy road or the dog that they are interested in adopting is very high energy.
-
Q: Do we adopt cross country?
- Yes, we do. We prefer to adopt out to local homes but will adopt out to a perfect home no matter where they are in the country.
-
Q: Do we transport dogs?
- No, we do not. Our adoption fee does not include transportation costs. If you wish to fly a dog cross country, we will look at this option on a case by case basis. You will need to pay for the dogs flight costs (usually $150-350), for a crate ($50 - 100), and for the health certificate ($20 - 50). If you are a state or two away from the dog, we can sometimes find volunteers that will help drive the dog closer to their new home.
-
Q: How do we select who gets to adopt which dog?
- We request that an application be submitted if you are interested in a particular dog. Follow only the links provided in that Malinois's profile to access the correct application for that dog. A home check is done and we check references. We don't necessarily pick the new owner by who sends in their app first but rather, who suits the dog the best. We want to match up our homes to our dogs so that the new home and the dog fit perfectly together.
