(Editor: Please PRE-PLAN! That cannot be stressed enough. All of the solutions below require TIME! At least 4-6 weeks! Failure to pre-plan is almost a guarantee NO ONE will be able to help you!)
Are you a Belgian Malinois pet owner facing foreclosure? There is NO need to leave your beloved pet behind! You may have more choices than you think when it comes to what to do with your pet during your foreclosure proceedings.. Many people are unsure of what to do with their pets if they are faced with foreclosure. Malinois are a breed apart from all others, but there are options available to you.
First, start out by asking friends, family, neighbors, etc to help you out! Ask if they could keep your pet, even if only for a short time. This allows you more time to figure out what to do next. You can even set up a system of your Belgian Malinois staying with different people on a rotating basis. Offer to continue to take your dog(s) for their walks, feed them and pay for their food and medical care.
If none of your family members, friends, neighbors, etc can help you and you are able to, board your dog. If this is not an option for you and you feel comfortable doing it, try to find your dog a new home. Make sure you talk with the potential new owners and see if they understand Malinois or have had experience with the breed. Make sure they are also ready for the amount of energy these guys have!
Another choice available to you is a "no-kill" shelter. Animals taken in here are kept until they are adopted to a new family. Check around a see if one is in your area. Once you contact one of these shelters, you usually have a time frame in which you must sign your Malinois over to them. Certain dates and times are usually set up for owner turn-ins at these shelters. No-kill shelters are rising in popularity so chances are there is one at least fairly close to where you are.
ABMC Rescue's ultimate goal is to help you keep your Malinois. We are providing a blog specifically for owners to list their contact information as needing a temporary home for their Malinois. Those willing to help Malinois owners in immediate need are also able to list their contact information. Our hope is that this blog will help put people needing help and those willing to help in contact with each other. Make sure when you post your need you provide complete and accurate contact information. Blog: ABMC Rescue Foreclosure Help
Last but not least, if none of these options are for you, but want to find your Malinois a new home, we have an Alternate Listing page. You can keep your dog, have people contact you and set up the terms on what you want for your pet. Requirements for putting your Malinois on the alternate page are having your pet spayed or neutered with a statement from your veterinarian and we must be notified ASAP after your dog has been placed in a new home. We can help you with home checks if you would like. Foster homes can rarely be found on short notice, so the sooner you decide to re-home your Malinois, the better the chances are that you will find a new home for them. By being pro-active in trying to find your dog a new home, the chances are that a friend or family member would consider temporarily housing the dog until a new home can be found. If you would like to take a look at our alternate page, here is the link http://www.malinoisrescue.org/otherrsc.shtml.
If posting to the blog and listing on the alternate page fail to help you find a solution for your Malinois, as a last resort, give American Belgian Malinois Rescue a chance to help you! Our website is http://www.malinoisrescue.org/ and you will find a list of contacts by state. If your state doesn't have a contact listed, go to the next state nearest you. We take in Malinois from families who can't keep them anymore as well as rescue Malinois from shelters. Each dog is placed in a foster home, evaluated and put up for adoption. We match our dogs as well as we can to the best applicant. For example, we would not give a super high-energy Malinois to a first-time owner! We treat these fosters as if they are our own.
We at American Belgian Malinois Rescue do care about your Malinois and their future; however, as a small organization, our resources are very limited which means using the above alternate resources are essential to finding a solution for helping your Malinois. Please do not leave finding a solution for your Malinois until the last minute as it inhibits anyone's ability to help you!!!
For your Malinois sake, please do not leave them abandoned in your home to fend for themselves. It can take weeks for these dogs to be found and to survive; they will eat anything from other animals at the house to the drywall off the walls. Once found, these great dogs usually wind up having to be euthanized as they are in such bad shape, they are unable to be saved. Please don't let this happen to your Malinois!
Don't let this happen to your Malinois!
