A NOTE TO POLICE OFFICERS, SAR GROUPS
AND OTHERS LOOKING FOR WORKING MALINOIS:
Many police officers/trainers/SAR groups approach Malinois rescue looking for young dogs to train. Most of our rescued dogs are not suitable for these types of jobs. Some of our rescued Malinois are actually dogs that have been rejected by police departments due to their inability to do the job. While we are not opposed to adopting dogs out as working dogs, we adopt only to individuals, never to organizations or police departments. Most of our rescued Malinois have had difficult beginnings in life. The majority will make fantastic family pets, but most of them do not have the temperament needed to work day after day with a police officer or in search and rescue. All dogs adopted through Malinois rescue will be spayed or neutered prior to placement.
Jacque 3 yr old neutered male - CO
Fee: $250
Jacque Malinois (age 3) is a boisterous boy who loves to play hard with his girlfriend Chica, a Belgian Tervuren.
Jacque loves to snuggle and is very affectionate. Jacque came to us as a rescue from Colorado in December 2010. Initially, he was a little rough, playing a little too vigorously for us humans, but has calmed down considerably.
We have worked with Jacques and he is now best buddies with our cat.
Jacque is about 72 pounds, likely had an accident with a car when he was young, breaking his right distal femur which healed completely, although it was not set properly. The musculature around the hip / thigh is not as developed as the muscular left side and appears slightly hollow. Jacque also had a 4 broken teeth on that side (incisor, canine & pre-molars which had to be surgically removed, probably from the same accident. X-Rays indicated that the apex of the canine was already abscessed, and he was treated with IV and subcutaneous antibiotics post-surgery. Jacque resumed eating and playing tug-of-war with no apparent discomfort after 24 hours. Jacque has suffered no apparent disability from his injury, keeps-up with Chica in the back yard although I recommend that the status of his left hip / leg be evaluated periodically.
Rehab:
His behavioral rehab focused on an attitude readjustment while playing to reduce his tendency to 'chomp" down on toys (and fingers) and to convert his play from tug-of war to retrieval and release of toys. Note that his play must be managed carefully to maintain his conditioning. His cat aggression (perhaps overly boisterous play) has continued unabated. His play is "fair" and he invites other dogs to play with him at tug-of-war. He is mouthy and insistent when he wants to play. An assortment of dog toys are essential and once he has mistaken a shoe for a toy.
Conditioning included the use of an ear pinch (right ear) to establish initial control & release of toys with the verbal command "Give". As an adjunct, a raised finger and voice command (No!) is used to effect release. Commands "Come", Sit", "Back", "Stay", "Bring", and "Give" were used in play. Hand signs for "Sit", "Down", "Come", "Stay" and "Back" have been integrated into voice commands for the past two months. "Stay" has been reinforced through toy retrieval. Several feigned throws of a toy will be made before the toy is actually thrown during which time he must remain seated.
Recommendations:
Jacque Malinois is a high-energy, happy dog with few truly aggressive tendencies. He is mouthy and insistent when he wants to play. He needs a home with another dog about his size and age, but with no cats. He needs a large yard to run and play in. I also recommend that he should not be placed in a home with young children.
He is crate trained, rides well in car (with or without crate), and walks well on leash with a pinch collar.

Shane 12-13 yr old neutered male - CO
Fee: $100
Shane is an older dog, with the heart and spirit of a puppy!
My owners moved to California and left me with friends. I got passed around from home to home and I wasn't always treated the way I should have been. I'm not perfect but I try, and I sure like people. One day I was dropped off at the Humane Society and I got really lucky because my foster parents came and saved me. When they picked me up at the shelter I only weighed 36 pounds, had a really nasty cough, bad breath and wasn't interested in eating. They took me to the doctor and got me all fixed up, except for my teeth. The doctor says I need to gain weight, but it's taking me awhile. I have finicky taste and would prefer fillet Mignon over dog food. My appetite has gotten better because of all the great food they feed me so I'm sure I'll be putting on the pounds in no time.
At my foster home, there is another Belgian Malinois named Kacie. She is a lot of fun. We run around and play in the back yard together all the time.
Kacie has been really nice and shares her toys with me although I tend to chew them up, especially the soft squeaker ones. I love to play fetch and will do it until I get tired which doesn't take very long.
We go on two walks everyday which is the perfect amount of exercise for me. I have a little bit of arthritis in my hips and shoulders, so a couple of short walks a day is all I need. I would be just as content to follow you around the house like most Belgians do.
My favorite thing in the whole world is getting lots of attention and petting. Once you start petting me I never want you to stop. If I could hang out with my foster parents all day, it would be perfect!
Since I am older, sometimes I have trouble waiting too long for a potty break. Also, I don't like being away from my foster parents and I tend to have an "accident" when they leave me in a crate all day. I get worried no one is going to come back for me.
Although I am labeled a special needs dog, I don't need medication or have any major health problems. I just hope whatever home I go to will be with owners where I can sneak out into the yard to "take care of business" whenever I need to. It would be great if they stayed home with me or if I could go to work with them instead of staying home in the crate by myself.
I know I am pretty old, but I still have lots of spunk left in me! I can't wait to find my forever home.
Shane is a very mellow, loving dog. He loves attention and will lean against you looking for love and to be petted. He knows basic commands like sit and will come when you call his name. Shane does get nervous when he is left alone and shows signs of separation anxiety. He would be happiest with a family where someone was home more often than not or if Shane could go to work with you. He can be crated, but does best if he isn't left in the crate for long hours because he tends to have accidents. Other than the accidents in the crate, Shane has never had an accident in the house. We think he has accidents in the crate because of his anxiety over being left alone. Shane is not food aggressive or possessive over toys, people or other dogs. He chews only dog toys or bones and is quite well behaved. When playing with our other Belgian Malinois, Kacie, he is happy to let her have the toy and go get a different one. He also loves to play fetch.
We don't think Shane was ever exposed to cats before he came to stay with us. In the beginning he was very fascinated by our cat and followed him around constantly. Now that Shane is use to the cat, he pretty much leaves him alone, although our cat is old and doesn't run or jump much. We would urge caution when first introducing Shane to a cat. We think if it was a younger cat that ran away from him, Shane would give chase. Shane interacts great with dogs he knows. However, if a strange dog approaches he becomes aggressive. Shane hasn't had interaction with children so we are not sure how he would behave, but since he loves people we think he would do pretty well.
Shane is up to date on all his vaccinations. His only medical issues are he is quite thin for his build but his appetite is good. We think with time, he will put weight on. Additionally, his teeth do need some work. According to the vet, there are a couple of teeth that need to be pulled and he needs a good overall cleaning. He does not seem to be any pain when eating and the vet would like him to gain some weight before doing any work on his teeth. He has some very mild arthritis in his hips and shoulders, but daily glucosomine supplements have helped tremendously.
Although Shane is an older dog, he has the heart and spirit of a puppy. Shane should be placed in a calm, more sedate home. He is a wonderful, loving dog who enjoys being with his owners and will follow you everywhere.
