UPDATE FOR RILEY – SHE IS MAKING LEAPS AND BOUNDS  & STILL GIVES FREE HUGS!

Riley is looking for her person.  She would prefer an active person with Malinois experience, who likes to throw the ball, go for walks, and let her cuddle in their lap. The ideal person would love hugs, because that is her special talent.  She has “happy eyes” and an incredible smile.

Even by Malinois standards, Riley is smart and very athletic.  Her foster thinks that she would do well with Obedience, disc or possibly dock diving.  She is fast, energetic, and loves to leap into the air for a ball.  Riley completed heartworm treatment  and her foster says that you would never know, because Riley is “so full of energy and life and fun.”

Riley LOVES people.  She wags and wiggles for humans who let her approach at her own pace.  She gets so excited to greet that sometimes you have to remind her to sit, because her instinct is to dance and jump for joy.  She probably isn’t good for small children because her enthusiasm can get the best of her.  Her foster says that she would “bond with an older child in a heartbeat” and that “she is so much fun to play with.”

Establishing trust is very important.  When playing fetch, in the beginning Riley is happy to trade with you, but once she realizes that you are hers, she is willing to play with one toy.    Riley is so affectionate and loyal that “it makes you feel good” to be chosen.  One of her foster’s favorite things is to sit and watch the sunset together.  Riley climbs into her lap, and they watch the day fade.

Riley knows sit, down, wait, and heel.  She will recall well under most conditions, but does have prey drive.  Her foster is working on helping her build focus and learn manners.  Her foster loves Riley’s “happy attitude and willingness.”  She “is fun to work with,” and would love a person who enjoys training and games, but Riley also loves just being outdoors and can just lay in the sun.

It seems like Riley did not have much time in the house before coming to rescue, but she is learning what is allowed and what is not.  She is gaining more privileges in her foster home, but if she gets frustrated, she can be redirected if she does something inappropriate.

Moving vehicles were Riley’s nemesis but she has made leaps and bounds riding in the car and can go on errands with her tail wagging.  She still likes to watch everything that is going by.  She is unsure about 4-wheelers and she is not afraid to tell you about it.  Her fosters are working on the barking when the 4-wheeler or ranger starts moving, but her family will need to move slowly to help her learn to relax if you have a 4-wheeler.

Resource guarding is something that her family will need to help Riley.  Once she decides she trusts you, she improves very quickly, however, this is a slow road and trades are appropriate play with a human at this time.  She is smart enough to accept a trade for a better item, or to trade one ball for you to throw another.  She can be a little growly over something really valuable, like a bone, but that’s brief if she trusts you or you offer to trade up to something better.

Riley is an “affectionate and engaging” dog.  She would like best to be an only dog, and definitely shouldn’t share a home with cats.  She has love and affection in abundance for her people, and wants a home where you can love her back just as much.

For someone who wants to train a sport dog, this girl is a gem.  She will need polish, so an experienced home is recommended.  She has higher than average energy.  If you are athletic and love training, she is a great partner.  She likes to work, wants to learn, and wants to bond with you.  You should like to play, to teach, and love whole-heartedly.  And of course, you must love hugs.
