Axel is a sweet, loving cuddle bug who has never met a stranger. He wants to be in your pocket all day long and, if you let him, he will say hello to everyone you meet on his daily walk. As a bonus, he’s a very polite boy when he says hello. Axel is extremely motivated by food. As long as you have a treat, you can make him do just about anything you want. He had no training at all coming into his foster home, but has made significant progress. He walks well on a leash. He has learned basic commands and sits, downs, spins, leave it, play dead, shake, stay, and kennel. Further, he is good and quiet in the crate. He is learning recall, and to go “out” of a room on command as well as continuing to strengthen the basics he’s learned. Axel has a great nose and he loves putting in work finding his meals. It’s his favorite morning game. He also really enjoys water. He has been known to complain the whole time his foster mom gives one of the other dogs a bath without him, and will stand in the tub to make sure his turn isn’t missed. Water bowls are also known to be exceptionally fun to splash in, to foster moms great dismay. Axel doesn’t play much with toys, but he does thoroughly enjoy stealing the dish towel off the stove every time foster mom turns her back! It’s really become a bit of a game, and he thinks he’s so slick when he does it! He is housebroken for the most part, but does need to be kept on a schedule as he is still learning inside rules. He is a dog that needs good exercise and attention, otherwise he can become bored, destructive, and develop a serious case of the zoomies. He does best with a good walk and either scent games or training activities in his day. Foster mom has been doing a good afternoon walk and a short training session or two throughout the day, and Axel does great! Once he’s had these he’s happy to mellow out at your feet! While he loves attention from anyone, he does bond strongly with one person. He will attach himself and follow that person wherever they go, and watch them when he can’t. He loves to work, quickly and enthusiastically learns new things, and needs to use that nose! He is currently with two female dogs. He has been excellent with them. If anything he’s a bit too friendly, so he probably shouldn’t be in a home with another dog that is touchy about personal space. Axel has done well with kids around 10 years old, but foster mom doesn’t know anyone younger to test him with. She suspects he would be a good boy, but can not confirm. He has been introduced and had supervised interactions with chickens and bunnies and while expressing interest, was not overly fixated on them. His views on cats are currently unknown. Preference will be given to homes within a one day drive of the foster home.
