Ryder is a very active boy who enjoys being with his people. He takes a little bit to warm up to men but once he does he just wants all the attention. Like a typical young Mal, Ryder likes to "think with his teeth" and can get mouthy at times. He is easily redirected with a ball or a toy though.
Due to his high ball/toy drive, it is expected Ryder would do well in sports. At the same time, his play should be supervised to prevent him from getting hyper-focused. Jolly Balls and other sturdy toys are recommended, since anything that can be taken apart will be taken apart (quickly and efficiently!). Ryder has very high prey drive and will not be placed in a home with cats or young children.
Ryder is very dog friendly if introduced appropriately. But he can be exuberant in his play and doesn't understand cues from dogs telling him enough is enough. Because of that he should always play under supervision and slow introductions are recommended.
Ryder walks beautifully on leash with a pinch collar, he respects what it is directing him to do most of the time. He has also started basic obedience and responds to commands in both English and German. He crates well and this is the best place for him to settle if he gets too excited about things and needs some downtime. While in his crate, he can be barrier reactive to strangers.
Ryder does have a tendency to be reactive to fast moving objects, especially those with wheels such as bicycles, rollerblades, etc. His new owner(s) will have to be experienced in redirecting young, high drive dogs in this context. Preferably Ryder would go to a home that intends to work him (obedience, nosework, barn hunt, dock diving, you name it) to help channel some of his energy and drive in the right direction. He is likely to do well in sports.
Overall, Ryder is a typical young, drive-y Malinois who will be a lot of fun to work with for a more experienced handler who can harness his energy. He will require a home with a fenced yard and is not suitable for apartment living.
