Karter is located in Houston TX and needs a foster or adopter. He s currently living in a kennel. He is heartworm positive and under going treatment now. He is expected to make a 100% recovery.

Karter was just hours away from being euthanized when ABMR pulled him from the shelter.

Karter is scared and confused. He is a very sweet dog but has obviously lived all of his life in a backyard or cage. He doesn't know how to walk on a leash, he's scared of noises, his legs are weak and he doesn't know how to walk on wood etc. floors.

Inside this boy is a sweet and willing dog. He has met a 10 year old child and totally ok, he has met cats and has no reaction to them. He's ok around other dogs but needs the proper introductions. Karter would do well in a home without other dogs.  He needs a home that will give him the time to adjust to being companion, and that is quiet and knowledgeable. He does not appear to be high drive though he seems like he’ll warm up to play. He likes to pick up toys and items and carry them around, but is still very scared.

Karter is calm, seems to be extreme low energy/drive for a mal. Some of that may change as he gets more comfortable. Even in the backyard he just walks around, no dashing fences or having the zoomies. Karter is going to need time to adjust, sudden movements and noises startle him, even just turning on or off the light startles him.

When he’s outside he often comes up to get pets, he loves affection. He allows leashing with no problem. He tilts his head and at noises and things. He is protective of his crate.

He is easily approached while he’s eating or has a chew and doesn’t act any different than he usually does. He is not potty trained. He does not seem to know any commands whatsoever. He does not understand how to walk on a leash, he’ll walk then completely freezes.  He’s super gentle taking treats from adults as well as kids. There is no sign of any aggression, just confusion.

Please consider letting Karter into your home and heart. We will consider foster and foster to adopt situations, transport is avaialable as long as you can meet at least half way or more.

Karter – 2 Years Old

What does home mean to you? Take a moment to sit with that while we tell you a little about Karter; what we know about his past, his current situation and what the perfect home would look like for him.
From what we know about Karter, he had very little to no experience interacting with people or with being inside of a home. Since late September he has been living with a trainer, his wife and 2 children (ages 8 and 9) and a 5-year-old female Dutch Shepherd.
He’s great in a crate, no barking or pulling at the crate, and will sit and wait before going in or out. Since he is taken out regularly for potty breaks, he appears to be housetrained and will sit and wait before going outside. He has no experience with a dog door. He’s adjusting to hardwood floors but seems most comfortable on carpet. He allows his teeth and nails to be touched.
He’s doing good with the other dog in the home and shows no signs of food aggression but is fed separately and left alone while eating. Although he doesn’t appear to have a strong prey drive, he does react to loud noises and sudden movements. He enjoys long walks (does tend to pull), loves deer antlers, beef jerky treats and music (which Alexa plays for him when he’s relaxing in his crate). He’s perfectly trainable and loves treats, sitting beside you on the floor, and being petted. He's not fond of squeaky toys and balls.
What might the ideal home look like for Karter? He may do best as an only dog or introduced slowly to the other dogs that live there. It is recommended there are no small children, small dogs or cats. Because he’s unsure of new things and is on guard at times, he needs time to adjust and get comfortable with you, so taking it slow and giving him structure to help build his confidence is key. An experienced dog person or people is best.
His name pretty much sums it up what home would be a great fit for him:

K – Kindness, patience and understanding
A – Affection including gentle hugs, pats and high-fives
R – Rewards for being a good boy and progress made
T – Time spent building trust (and treats)
E – Everlasting love and commitment
R – Relaxing home environment with comfy bed to call his own
Now go back to the initial question about what home means to you. Does it match up with this sweet boy’s definition of a perfect home? After learning more about Karter, can you see yourself being willing to provide everything on his list? If so, this may be the boy for you. Perfect love does exist and it’s available for you in the form of a pup named Karter.
